Best Electric Trikes for Older Farmers and GardenersWhy this page? Because there comes a point when working smarter around a farm or large garden becomes more important than proving how much ground you can cover on foot. Suzie and I are both 68. We used to think nothing of getting on our bikes for a 180 km bikeathon, but these days electric trikes are looking a lot more attractive. We still want to stay active — we'd just prefer to arrive at the garden with enough energy left to actually do some gardening. That matters because the average farmer in North America is now in their late 50s. Labour-saving tools aren't a niche concern anymore. For many of us, they're part of figuring out how to keep farming and gardening comfortably for years to come. An electric trike can be surprisingly practical on a farm or larger property. It can make the trip from the house to the greenhouse easier, carry tools and supplies to a distant garden, move a small harvest back to the packing area, or simply reduce the amount of unnecessary walking during a workday. Unlike an electric bicycle, a trike also gives you three-wheel stability when stopped and provides useful cargo space without requiring you to balance a loaded bike. For this comparison, I looked at four Mooncool electric trikes that appear particularly well suited to farm and garden use: the TK2 PRO, FT1 Fat Tire, TK2 and TK Pro. My choices are based on Mooncool's published specifications and on the features I think matter most to an older grower: easy mounting, stability, cargo capacity, tires, range, braking, motor power and comfort. I have not personally road-tested these trikes.

Electric trikes can reduce unnecessary walking while still keeping older
growers active and involved in the work.
Quick Comparison
Published maximum ranges can vary considerably with rider weight, cargo, terrain, hills, temperature and the amount of electric assistance used. How I Chose the Best Electric Trikes for Older Farmers and GardenersA good farm trike isn't necessarily the same as a good recreational electric trike. For an older grower, I would put less emphasis on top speed and more on easy mounting, stability at low speeds, braking and parking brakes, ability to handle grass and gravel, cargo space, rider-plus-cargo capacity, range around larger properties, comfortable seating and how naturally the electric assistance responds. Three wheels provide useful stability when stationary, but a trike behaves differently from a bicycle, particularly when turning or travelling across a slope. Anyone new to an electric trike should take some time to become familiar with its handling before using it on uneven farm terrain. 1. Mooncool TK2 PROBest for: Older farmers and gardeners wanting the strongest combination of comfort, power, range and everyday utility.
The TK2 PRO is my first choice among the best electric trikes for older farmers and gardeners because it combines a relatively low step-through design with plenty of power, useful cargo capacity and features that should make everyday riding easier. Mooncool rates it for up to 450 pounds total load. It has a 48V 20Ah battery, a 750W rated motor producing up to 1,310W peak output, 90Nm peak torque and a published maximum range of up to 100 miles. It uses 20 × 3-inch tires. One feature that particularly interests me for an older rider is the torque sensor. Rather than simply switching the motor on when the pedals rotate, a torque sensor responds to how hard you are pedalling. That should make electric assistance feel smoother and more natural when starting, climbing or changing effort. The TK2 PRO also includes a rear differential, hydraulic disc brakes, suspension fork, reverse function, parking brake and multiple pedal-assist modes. Front and rear baskets provide space for hand tools, seedlings, irrigation fittings, a small harvest, lunch, rain gear and similar everyday farm cargo. Why I Like ItExcellent combination of low-step access, cargo capacity, torque-sensing assistance, strong braking and battery capacity. Things to ConsiderIt's a substantial machine. Even though it folds, this isn't something most people will casually lift into a vehicle. The 3-inch tires should be appropriate for firm gravel and decent grass, but growers regularly travelling over rougher, softer ground should also consider the FT1. Check Current TK2 PRO Price →2. Mooncool FT1 Fat Tire Electric TrikeBest for: Gravel lanes, grass, uneven garden paths and rougher rural properties.
If your main concern is terrain rather than maximum range, the FT1 Fat Tire Electric Trike deserves serious consideration. Its defining feature is the 20 × 4-inch tires. Wider tires provide a larger footprint and should be better suited to grass, loose gravel and uneven rural surfaces than narrower tires. Mooncool gives the FT1 a maximum load rating of 400 pounds, a 48V 14.5Ah battery, 500W motor with up to 1,092W peak output, a seven-speed drivetrain and a published range of up to 60 miles. It also includes front and rear baskets, a broad seat with backrest, suspension fork, rear differential and parking brake. For farm use, the biggest selling point isn't a 60-mile published range. Few growers need that much distance between the garden and the barn. The real advantage is the fat tires. If your usual route includes a long gravel driveway, grassy lanes, orchard paths or rough tracks between growing areas, this is the Mooncool model I'd examine first. Why I Like ItThe 4-inch tires make the FT1 the strongest choice in this group for typical rural grass and gravel conditions. Things to ConsiderIt uses a cadence sensor rather than the torque sensor found on the Pro models and is also a heavy trike.
Remember: Fat tires improve rough-ground capability, but
this is still a trike rather than an ATV. Deep mud, severe ruts and steep
side slopes are not what it is designed for.

3. Mooncool TK2 Electric TrikeBest for: Gardeners and small-property owners who want useful cargo capacity without paying for the premium model.
The TK2 may be the sweet spot if you like the TK2 PRO concept but don't need its larger battery, torque sensor and more powerful motor. Mooncool gives the TK2 a 450-pound maximum load, a 48V 15Ah battery, 500W motor with 1,092W peak output and 65Nm torque. Published range is up to 75 miles. It rides on 20 × 3-inch tires and includes a rear differential, reverse, hydraulic disc brakes, parking brake and multiple pedal-assist modes. Front and rear baskets are included. For someone primarily travelling between the house, garden, greenhouse, barn, shed, compost area and mailbox, this is likely more capability than most growers actually need. That's where an electric trike begins to make sense as a labour-saving farm tool rather than simply recreational transportation. Why I Like ItYou retain the 450-pound capacity, useful baskets, hydraulic braking and 3-inch tires while paying less than for the premium models. Things to ConsiderThe TK2 uses a cadence sensor, and its step-over is higher than the Pro models. Riders with reduced hip or knee mobility should compare this carefully. 4. Mooncool TK Pro Electric TrikeBest for: Older riders who put a high priority on getting on and off easily, comfortable seating and smooth pedal assistance.
The TK Pro has several features that stand out specifically for older riders. Its step-over height is approximately 12.2 inches, and it comes with a broad saddle and backrest. It also has a torque sensor, multi-speed drivetrain, hydraulic disc brakes, parking brake, rear differential, front suspension and front and rear baskets. Power is substantial: a 750W motor with up to 1,310W peak output and 90Nm torque, paired with a removable 48V 20Ah battery. Mooncool publishes a range of up to 100 miles and a 450-pound maximum load. For someone with reduced hip flexibility, knee mobility or less confidence balancing a conventional bicycle, the low-step frame may be considerably more important than another inch of tire width or a few extra miles of theoretical range. Why I Like ItStrong combination of easy access, supportive seating, natural-feeling pedal assistance and substantial load capacity. Things to ConsiderThe baskets are useful but not enormous. This is transportation with light cargo capability rather than a substitute for a farm utility cart. Which Mooncool Electric Trike Would I Choose?Among the best electric trikes for older farmers and gardeners, there isn't one model that wins every category. If I were choosing for a typical small farm with reasonably firm lanes and paths, I'd start with the TK2 PRO. Its torque sensor, strong motor, hydraulic brakes, low step-over, 450-pound capacity and larger battery make it the most complete package. If I expected to spend a lot of time travelling over grass and gravel, I'd choose the FT1 because of its 4-inch tires. If price mattered more and the property was relatively level and firm, the TK2 would probably give me the most utility for the money. And if getting on and off comfortably were my biggest concern, I'd give the TK Pro a close look because of its low step-over, backrest seat and torque-sensing assistance. What Can You Actually Carry on an Electric Farm Trike? This is where expectations matter. An electric trike can work well for carrying harvest baskets, hand tools, seedlings, transplants, irrigation supplies, lunch, water, rain gear and other modest loads while travelling between different parts of a property. It can also save a surprising amount of walking when checking fences, moving between widely separated growing areas or simply travelling down a long rural driveway. But I wouldn't buy one expecting it to haul large bags of feed, major loads of compost or serious quantities of firewood.
Important: The published maximum load includes the
rider plus cargo. A 450-pound rating does not mean you can
place 450 pounds in the basket.
For genuinely heavy farm hauling, a powered wheelbarrow, dump cart, ATV, UTV or tractor is still the better tool. Why an Electric Trike Can Make Sense as We Get OlderThis is ultimately why electric trikes belong in The Healthy Farmer: Work Smarter, Stay Strong. The goal isn't to stop moving. It's to stop wasting energy. Walking around the garden is good exercise. Walking all the way back to the shed for the tool you forgot isn't particularly productive exercise. Neither is carrying a small harvest hundreds of feet simply because you don't want to start the tractor. For the right property, an electric trike can sit in the useful space between walking and taking a motor vehicle. That may leave an older grower with a little more energy for planting, harvesting, pruning, weeding and all the other jobs where your time and strength actually matter. What to Check Before Buying an Electric Trike for Farm UseTerrainHard-packed lanes and level lawns are very different from loose gravel, mud, ruts and uneven field roads. SlopesThree wheels provide useful stationary stability, but trikes require care when cornering and travelling across slopes. Step-Over HeightIf hip or knee mobility is an issue, compare this carefully. A difference of only a few inches can make mounting considerably easier. StorageElectric trikes are large and heavy even when they fold. Make sure you have somewhere dry and convenient to store and charge one. TransportDon't assume you'll lift one onto an ordinary bicycle rack. These are substantially heavier than conventional bikes. CargoLook at actual basket dimensions as well as the overall maximum load rating. Parts and ServiceElectric trikes combine conventional bicycle components with a motor, battery, controller and electronics. Consider how replacement parts and service will be handled before buying. My Bottom LineThe best electric trikes for older farmers and gardeners aren't necessarily the fastest models or the ones with the longest advertised range. For farm use, I'd rather have easy mounting, good brakes, stable handling, useful cargo space and tires suited to my property. Best Overall — Mooncool TK2 PROThe strongest all-around choice for frequent property use. Best for Rough Ground — Mooncool FT1The 4-inch tires make this the model I'd look at first for grass and gravel. Best Value — Mooncool TK2Plenty of useful farm-and-garden capability without stepping up to the premium price. Best for Comfort & Easy Access — Mooncool TK ProLow-step access, supportive seating and torque-sensing assistance make it particularly appealing to older riders. An electric trike isn't going to replace your tractor, garden cart or wheelbarrow. But it might replace hundreds of unnecessary trips on foot — and leave a little more energy for the gardening and farming you actually enjoy.
