I've read a lot of articles about self sustaining aquaponic systems and I'm curious to know if you've looked into these growing systems?

I have in fact looked at aquaponic systems, in particular the S & S Aquaponics systems looks interesting. But like with any other form of horticulture, you need to get your system in place and get some experience with it before the Big Mess happens.
Since I'm close to a couple big rivers, I will probably get my fish the old-fashioned way, with a pole and line.
