Selling extra produce from our home garden

by Lynn
(Indiana)

Each year we have a fairly big garden and this year it was quite prolific. I saw an interview in the local paper regarding a new farmers market in our town.

In it the person said they welcome all kinds of local producers, from the large growers to the backyard gardener with a little extra produce. I called and they were excited to have me. I brought in my extra and it all sold out. I went every Saturday this summer and sold my extra produce.

I was invited by another market for their weekly distribution and I sold there too. I really enjoyed myself and made a lot of new friends.

People keep coming back to buy my produce and told their friends too. I consider this to be a successful venture and we are planning an actual market garden for next year.

I have been reading everything I can and in November I will buckle down and get to planning the next garden.

Great way to start market gardening
by: Scott K

hi Lynn

that's a great start-up story, before I started my CSA home delivery program I had a little market stand on my farm, and sold 'overflow' from my home garden. It's a great way for anybody to get started growing for market.

You might also ask friends and co-workers if they would like goodies from your garden next season, that is how I 'moved up' to market gardening on a regular basis. The positive response gave me confidence to expand, and the advance cash flow (they paid me in advance for a season's worth of veggies) helped me buy equipment.

Good story, and happy growing
